点评：Repeat client of Zanna Tours here—will be taking my third trip to Calabria next summer and I highly recommend Gianluca de Francesco, the founder of Zanna Tours. Gianluca is a licensed tour guide, is bilingual, and can provide all land-based services for you. He has a clean, comfortable, reliable vehicle (yes, there is AC) and is an excellent driver, so no need to worry about navigating the roads which can be challenging for some Americans like me.
If you want, Zanna can plan your whole trip for you, but if you want something different, customized for you, they are open and very responsive. Gianluca listened to my wish list, considered logistics, and made appropriate recommendations. The itinerary included places I never would have found if I was planning by myself—everything from cultural museums and art, to exploring archaeological sites. Gianluca is well-versed in History and culture, and easily communicates the significance of each place we visited, like a good teacher. (No wonder he is in demand to lead tours for other tour operators.) And as he was born and raised in Calabria, he has amazing local contacts in small businesses (hotels, restaurants, sites, etc.)—and they all greet him warmly and with smiles. Gianluca is genuine, down-to-earth, and unpretentious, but well-educated and just wicked smart.
What did I do in Calabria with Zanna Tours? My first trip was with my sisters and Gianluca helped us find where our grandmother lived, translating between the village officials and my family. What a wonderful experience! This summer, I had more time and was able to have more contact with my heritage, visiting more family villages. Along the way, I journeyed to some amazing places, including one of Italy’s most beautiful villages (included in I Borghi più belli d'Italia), Fiumefreddo Bruzio. I cannot wait to return to Calabria.
