Royal Fortress at Chinon - a historical not-to-be missed attraction!

点评：Henry Plantagenet II, grandson of William the Conqueror and Fulk III the Black married Eleanor of Aquitaine, Duchess of Aquitaine in 1152. Together they owned more land than the King of France, King Louis VII, Elanor’s first husband. The Fortress of Chinon was the centre of the Plantagenet Empire, which stretched from Scotland to the Pyrenees. The Fortress is situated on a rock face overlooking the medieval town of Chinon and is well worth a visit. You can ascend the rockface to reach the Castle in a lift, which can be reached through an entrance arch way located off the main town square. We were fortunate in that on the day that we visited the Castle, they were giving a demonstration of how the ancient catapults used to work in hurling huge rocks at city walls to try and breach them. It was fascinating. We then walked through the rooms where Eleanor and Henry stayed and saw their bedrooms and the clothes they wore, including Henry II’s suit of armour and Eleanor’s gown. Being a direct descendant of King Henry II and Queen Eleanor, it was a very special experience for me and something I have wanted to do all my life. There was even a goblet of Charlemagne on display, together with the royal crown and Henry II’s sword. The Plantagenets were the first to utilise slits through which arrows could be shot at approaching enemies. The Royal Treasury of the south-west provinces was housed here. Eleanor was placed under house arrest at Chinon for nine months in 1173 by Henry after the revolt of his sons. Henry died at the Fortress of Chinon in 1189 and his headstone can be seen in the grass lawn. Richard the Lionheart and my great-great-grandfather King John, continued to work on the fortress. We could look down from the ramparts and see the Church and the apartment where we were staying. This is a must-see historical attraction.
