Spa Montage Kapalua Bay的点评
点评：I really wanted to love my experience at the Spa Montage. I booked a few months ago based on the reviews here. We are staying in beautiful Kapalua and I always get a massage whenever it’s either my birthday or any of our kids’ birthdays. The only hard choice to make was the Ritz or Montage. Since I’ve already experienced the spa at the Ritz before (awesome) I selected the Montage. I didn’t receive either an email or text reminder of my appointment, but I wasn’t worried.
Bottom line is that I overpaid for the ambience here. Mind you the spa entrance is designed to be breathtaking, it is. The women’s locker room is very big, robes are nicer than other spas except for the Fairmont Sonoma. Slippers make a lot of noise when wet, but I could have also worn my own flip flops.
My spa attendant who gave me a tour, Chirobi, sorry if I misspelled her name, was very polite. We chitchatted a bit about her beautiful country of Japan. The only thing that she forgot to mention was that there is an upstairs room with bananas, mandarins, and granola along with tea. I kept wondering why this was the only spa that didn’t offer snacks and they have no signs to tell you to go upstairs for that. The people using the spa weren’t the friendliest and don’t say good morning. But, I wasn’t there to make friends.
I am giving this place 2 out of 5 stars for the nice bath towels and because my therapist told me at the end of my service that I could go upstairs for hot tea. So that is where I discovered the bananas and such.
I booked a 60 minute hot stone massage with the possibility of extending to 90 minutes. She told me she had nobody after me so the thought was intriguing. I also selected the outdoor hale because of what it says on their spa menu:
“Our Makai (sea) spa experience honors the island lifestyle…”
Now in my mind I saw the word “sea” and I imagined that my hale would at least be overlooking the beautiful Maui ocean. Not the case. The tiny house is outside and she opened the back door so I could possibly hear the trickle of the little stream. I put that all out of mind and decided to enjoy the massage.
When asked by the therapist what she should focus on, I requested a medium pressure Swedish style massage and I kept waiting for it. I think I got her basic routine which was a very soft pressure with long strokes. My target areas were barely addressed and I made a mistake with the upgraded hot stones. When she used the stones they were not smooth and they were rough and scratchy. I was actually relieved when she didn’t use them that much. Now I realize it was my fault for not noticing that they were salt stones vs smooth stones. I just saw the word stones and I clicked yes. As you may have inferred, I did not request the 90 minute upgrade and I think she was not interested either because she never mentioned it again.
I usually love to hangout and use the hot tub afterwards, but decided it was time to go after some hot tea and a banana. At checkout I didn’t question why the gratuity was already set in stone and I probably should have. I am hoping it gets divided amongst the spa attendants because they do keep the place spotless. Perhaps my therapist was tired that day and needs a massage of her own. If so, I highly recommend Tim.
The reason I’m writing this review today is because I just had the BEST massage ever at a humble local place. My husband told me he felt sad for me regarding my spa experience and he was about to book me a massage at the Ritz this morning when I told him to stop. I told him I did not want him overpaying for my ambience even though I’ve had a great body scrub there in the past. He agreed and booked me somewhere close by and that made all the difference. My knee pain is healed and the attention to my request of medium Swedish was honored for a blissful 90 minutes. This place is not fancy whatsoever, but it was the quality of the massage that will make me a lifelong customer and will be telling all my friends to go there too.
As I was leaving I mentioned my poor experience the other day and he told me something funny. He told me that he used to work for the Montage. He agreed with me regarding the pretty ambience. I told him how I thought I’d be outside close to the ocean and he proceeded to sketch a little map of the Kapalua area for me. He showed me exactly the place that was dedicated for outdoor massages there. It kind of reminded me of how Merriman’s has an outdoor bar right out at the water’s edge. He told me how clients would love their massage out there so much, especially at sunset and under the stars. He said he left because they took that option away and when he kept asking when it would come back for clients they told him “Never.”
Anyhow, I did not tell him the name of my therapist nor will I mention it here either. I did tell him it was their loss that he no longer worked there and if he did and had been my therapist at the Montage this review would have been only two words: Mahalo Mahalo
