点评：Our experience at Ararat Asylum was satisfactory overall. The buildings themselves were fantastic and very atmospheric, and the location is naturally eerie without needing added drama. The history was interesting, but we felt there could have been more of it to keep the group engaged.
Our guide appeared to be quite new and possibly still gaining experience. Some friendly advice would be to lean more into the rich history of the site rather than relying on loud screams to create scares. The asylum is naturally eerie, and the real stories are powerful enough to hold attention and keep people engaged. A calmer, more confident delivery with deeper historical detail would likely keep groups interested and prevent people from losing focus. With more experience and refinement, the tour could have been much stronger.
Unfortunately, the guide also became frustrated with the group when a couple of participants lingered briefly to observe the grounds. One group member was asked to hold a lantern and hurry the rest of the group along, which I believe took away from their experience as a participant and would have made them feel more like part of the staff than a guest. These factors contributed to some participants becoming bored or losing interest by the end of the tour.
The guide was dressed in dark clothing with smudged under-eye makeup to appear scary, however, given the site’s history as a hospital, a period-appropriate nursing uniform may have felt more authentic if choosing to conduct the tour in costume. Additionally, having two staff members, one leading the tour and another positioned at the back to ensure the group stays together, would likely improve the overall flow and reduce frustration.
