点评:Our tour – We basically did the NC500 route (minus a cut over across Flow Country when we left Inverness heading north that excluded the area around Aberdeen). All told, we did a 12-day tour in and out of Edinburgh. We drove a little over 1500 miles and loved it. We were oriented mostly on vistas and seeing the requisite sites. One of our group was nursing a foot injury, so hiking (of any distance) was off the table. We offered ourselves up in the highest budget category which manifests in what hotels and/or hotel rooms you get. We began our coordination with Celtic Routes in mid-January, and we made the trip in early September.
The Car – The car was particularly nice. We drove a Land Rover Discovery with the quiet diesel engine. It had the most comfortable car seats of any car that my wife or I had been in. We averaged 30.8 mpg across all driving conditions…certainly with a lot of stop and go. The car maneuvered nicely. It was spacious enough inside, but a sufficiently small chassis that parking and dodging cars on the singletrack roads was not an issue. We did not have any mechanical issues. The umbrella, cooler, maps and chairs were a nice add. Be sure and check whether you have a diesel or gas car. I didn’t realize that I had a diesel until I first went to fill it up.
A great recommendation – The road that cuts across Flow Country…the tiny track that cuts left and up (signposted Lothbeg) was a great drive. It felt like we were the only people on the planet…surrounded by many, many sheep. This was a great route recommendation.
Planning products – the app worked great, but it would have been nice to have gotten that much earlier (once I had paid for the trip) so that we could double check that we were hitting all the places that we wanted to hit in addition to their recommendations. A printout of the map overviews, for example, would have been helpful early on. As it was, we only had a general idea of where we were going and what we were seeing until we got the app.
Hotels – Overall, we thought the hotels were very nice and met expectations. They were all quite different and seemed commensurate with the budget we allowed ourselves. Of course, we don’t know what any of them cost. They all had very nice breakfasts which all seemed to start at 0800. This would typically put us on the road about 0900.
A point of improvement, knowing that our tour was largely driving the country, having efficiently placed hotels made a big difference. On Skye, we stayed at the Three Chimneys. This was a very nice hotel with a great staff. It is, however, way out on the northwest side of Skye. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Portree (or anywhere for that matter). Skye could have been organized in a single loop with the initial stay at The Three Chimneys and then a clockwise drive around Skye. This worked great; however, when we had wrapped up around Portree and the Fairy Pools, it would have been nice to have stayed down there somewhere (in Portree). As it was, we had to drive the 45 minutes back to our hotel (in the opposite direction of where we were going the next day)…then get up early, re-trace that route off Skye. We ran into a similar issue with Newton Lodge…we re-traced our steps (though to a lesser degree than on Skye) when we might have stayed around Ullapool and not had to back track.
The timing of our stay around Loch Ness and Inverness was a bit of a challenge. We got everything in, but this was largely because we managed to catch Culloden on our way into the area from the Cairngorms. Similarly, we were able to see Dunrobin Castle (late in the day) because we overshot Dornoch to fit in Dunrobin. Otherwise, Dunrobin opens at 1000 which really gives you a late start move across to Loch Assynt. Not sure what the recommendation is there other than if you plan to fill your days with hiking around the Cairngorms or Loch Ness, you might need more time here. We had discussed our concerns about this prior to departure, but never really resolved anything.
We added a stay on Loch Lomond mostly because it was so famous and said by many to be the prettiest loch in Scotland (not sure about that claim…we saw a lot of impressive ones). Anyway, with this stay, we did not think that our stay in Port Appin at the Pier House Hotel really bought us much. It might have been an okay location to launch for the islands, but this is an area where refining the itinerary ahead of time would make a difference. We opted to skip the islands (by day 10 we had seen a lot of countryside). Had we understood the routing and Port Appin a bit better, we would have skipped this hotel in lieu of Cameron House to have afforded us more time around Loch Lomond.
Stopping at Loch Lomond was our request. Celtic Routes recommended Cameron House which was a great add…I know it wasn’t cheap, but it was among the nicest hotels that I’ve ever stayed at. I was tired at this point in time (day 11) and having a half day to decompress lakeside at that great facility was very nice.
