Komodo islands, so much more than a dragon.

点评：A last-minute decision, found us back in Indonesia kayaking again. Back on the best boat ever, the Jakare was our home on the water for exploring around the Komodo group of Islands, both by kayak and snorkeling, with the odd hike to break it up.
This area is well known for the amazing Komodo dragon, which only exists on five of these islands. But in fact, it is so much more than this. It is a unique environment in the world. Effectively a funnel between two great oceans, it brings amazing flows of water and associated nutrients through a narrow gap between islands.
This supplies the most abundant and diverse marine environment on the planet, and of course, our playground for eight days. Living onboard this beautiful vessel is an incredible way to travel, with the most amazing crew. Coupled with the organization and expert guiding of Southern Sea Ventures, it makes for an unbeatable trip.
There was great kayaking, exploring small sea caves, blowholes, and mangroves. Night paddling while watching the sunset over a volcano and returning to the boat, paddling through bioluminescence, were highlights on top of the water.
Underneath the water was a beautiful surprise. Snorkeling in this incredible part of the ocean is such a treat, with beautiful corals, an abundant variety of fish, and plenty of turtles.
Night time snorkeling also added a different view of the reef.
Off the water, we had some great but hot walks to spectacular viewpoints, and of course, tracking down the elusive Komodo dragon was a real treat, even if it did get a bit too close for comfort!
Add in the luxury of the Jakare and its wonderful crew, some good company, and the great insights of the area from our excellent guide, Elijah, and it made for a trip to remember.
