点评:Petworth House has been on the "to visit" list for decades and, at long last, we managed to fit in a whole day at the home of important artworks. A welcome video advises Petworth is home to the most important collection held by the National Trust but how is it measured? Upton House has a remarkable collection. Perhaps by number of Old Masters.
In any event, we had a very enjoyable day. No shortage of volunteers (as happens at some properties - I know having been a room steward) and free talks/walks available. We listened to one addressing key individuals who've lived at Petworth and took the Tunnels tour - the latter really was excellent. The lead guide held the dozen visitors spellbound; well, almost. This tour is only available for three months of the year because of fifteen species of bats.
The monumental porcelain exhibition "Expressions in blue" gave a contemporary perspective to the rooms and parkland, reminding me of how modern art at Chatsworth sits well with the centuries-old works.
Thanks to a post on Facebook, we looked specifically for the Thomas Patch painting in the Oak Hall, featuring the monkey painting its own portrait. All in all, a really excellent visit.
