点评:We have been travelling through Peru, Ecuador, all of Central America and now Mexico for eight months. After all the hype about Izamal and its convent, it was so disappointing.
More than 20 years ago it may have been a very picturesque town, but most of it is now run down, with ceilings and walls of buildings exhibiting large areas of grime, mould and blistering paintwork; including inside the church in the convent.
The handicraft museum and cultural centre that was supposed to be on 31st street could not be found. The plazas are very plain and not that well looked after. The poor horses for the carriages stand in 35° direct sun waiting to haul tourists around the small town that can easily be explored on foot.
The Mayan ruins are somewhat interesting if you haven’t seen any others, but they pale in significance to others in Honduras, Guatemala and Uxmal nearby.
There is really very little to do here, unless you have not seen any small towns with a history of Mayan and Spanish culture.
We caught the bus out of there two hours before the bus we had booked.
In my opinion, given the 1.5 hour trip each way in buses that have no idea how to set a comfortable temperature with the air-conditioning, it is not worth wasting a day on it.
