My husband and I had the opportunity of a lifetime: to see one of the world’s rarest birds in the wild — the Okarito kiwi.
Twenty years ago, only 150 Okarito kiwis roamed 54,000 acres near the tiny town of Okarito (population 28 — not counting birds). Thanks to strong conservation efforts, their numbers have grown to around 600.
We joined a night hike with Okarito Kiwi Tours — the only South Island operator permitted by the Department of Conservation to guide visitors into kiwi habitat. Ian Cooper, the owner and our guide, gave careful instructions and reminded us to bring patience, the right attitude, and deep respect for the birds.
We left behind phones, rain jackets, even water bottles — the slightest sound could scare them off. Our small group of six followed every rule.
It paid off.
A faint rustle in the bush — it could only be one thing. We froze. Ian cast a soft red light along the trail, and first a long bill appeared, then the full body of a male named Moss. He had no idea we were there — exactly as it should be. After a few magical moments, he slipped across a creek bed and disappeared. Mission accomplished. We celebrated with a quiet group hug just as the skies opened and it poured through the night and into the next day.
We know you can predict or plan what nature will do but on this night, the stars aligned!
