A beautiful colonial building that instantly draws you in — and yes, very good air-conditioning, which matters in Taiping.
If you’re specifically looking for Perak’s political or royal history, this isn’t the place. For the story of Perak royalty, head to the Royal Museum in Kuala Kangsar. For town history, the Taiping Town Gallery is a better stop.
Inside, the museum is more thematic than chronological:
Area A is a seasonal exhibition space. It changes regularly — currently featuring a dragon-themed exhibition, which is surprisingly engaging.
Area B focuses on taxidermy from the British era, dating back to the 1880s, when British explorers were documenting wildlife in the Malay Peninsula.
Area C showcases local traditions and cultural practices.
Upstairs shifts the focus to Orang Asli communities and traditional crafts, with a notable section on pottery.
There’s also an outdoor exhibit area, which adds another layer to the visit and complements the indoor galleries well.
Entrance fee: RM2 (locals), RM5 (non-locals).
