Cirque de mafate的点评
点评：once you arrive to Salazie, continue driving towards Grand Ilet. the road will end at a paid parking lot -21.061761951695615, 55.45040627388359
the paid lot is mostly catered to overnight hikers into Cirque de Mafate. if you are only there for day hike, just park 200 m downhill from and before the the paid lot
after parking, walk towards the paid lot. this is where the trailhead to Col De Boeufs can be found. it takes about 20 minutes one way from parking to Col De Boeufs pass.
the descent into Cirque de Mafate begins from the pass. most hikers have two destinations in mind at this point
- Marla
- La Nouvelle
each hamlet is about 2-2.5h one way. both hamlets pass the mystical Plaines des Tamarins where cattle can be found. the two hamlets are in different directions and therefore about 2h hike from each other. I missed the turn off for Marla, so ended up in La Nouvelle instead, which is a pleasant surprise. I believe this village is bigger than Marla and is in fact the classic route into Cirque de Mafate.
La Nouvelle has a bakery, chapel, several restaurants and gites. there is also an excellent viewpoint called "Vue panoramique cirque de Mafate" which you can find from googlemap, well worth the short walk to see it
I find this hike to be more scenic than the hike to Col du Taibit. so if you only have time and stamina to do one hike, i will choose this one. the difficult portions are the beginning (near Col de Bouefs) and the end (near La Nouvelle) . this is because it entails an uphill hike on the return leg, when sun is beating down your back.
