点评:We were pleasantly surprise to find the first long-span suspension bridge in the state of Maine. Actually, what you see is the circa 2006 version as the original bridge was torn down. You can see the large 1931 pillars below in the Penobscot River.
A turn-off south of the bridge leads to a viewing area. You can’t miss the turn-off as there is the only one traffic light in the area.
The original bridge was built in 1931. The cost was less than a million dollars. The newer bridge cost $12 million. The bridge is 135 feet above water giving room for larger ships. The bridge, Waldo-Hancock, is named from the two counties the bridge joins.
If you continue down the turn-off road, there is Fort Preble, also known as Fort Hancock. The fort was bult in 1808 under President Thomas Jefferson for coastal defenses. Commodore Edward Preble was a Maine native who became a prominent naval officer. The cost to enter the fort area is $9 dollars for a non-residents.
