Attractive gardens. Some overpriced food.

点评：Reasonable entry price (£5), payable at cafe. A hillside garden is reserved for purely spring-flowering evergreen shrubs, the main gardens are herbaceous borders with wide variety of interesting plants. Some very unusual flowers among the borders especially a white & pink patterned crocosmia (?) we've never come across before. Still working on its ID ! After surveying the borders we tried the refreshments - the cafe food was problematic - a lady hiker from nearby Pitt Farm campsite suggested we avoid the rolls priced at £9.50 - they indeed turned out to be rather small & not well filled, so we opted for a slice of fruit cake (good but £3.75), lemon drizzle cake (not very lemony) and a pot of tea for 2 which was tasty & reasonable. It would therefore be well worth bringing a packed lunch with you on a visit to this out-of-the-way area. There didn't seem to be enough water available to make the old mill wheel operational, although the mill pond was full.
The beach waterfall at Spekes Mill Mouth is a 1 mile walk from the crossroads outside the gardens, up & down along a stony uneven narrow track - well worth the time & effort for the views along the Hartland coastline.
