Carlota who hosted our visit was incredibly informative in both the vineyard as well as cellar, and her passion for biodynamic farming and wine making methods was infectious.
The detailed explanations of how biodynamic methods enabled Carlota and her mother to avoid the use of pesticides, and ensured that their winemaking was attuned to nature with respect to seasons, microclimate and soils was fascinating.
The wines themselves were excellent from the entry level wines which still offered a degree of finesse, to the single vineyard expressions of varietals which were expressive, elegant, and layered with aromas and flavours.
It was clear from carlota's explanations combined with tasting the range of wines, how the vineyard practices combined with cellar treatment in either amphora or barrels differentiated the mouthfeel, fruit and aromas of the various wines.
For anyone who is interested in the purest expression of place and grape variety in Spanish wine making, and in particular DO Empordà, Vinyes d'Olivardots is a must visit!
