点评:We saw the Birling Gap cottages on a Sunday in June whilst visiting the area.
The Birling Gap is owned by National Trust, there is a large (pay & display) car park here which gets busy at popular times. The car park is free for National Trust members. I believe that there is also a public bus service which serves the area.
The four cottages at the Birling Gap remain from an original terrace of eight which were built in 1878 to house coastguard personnel. Coastal erosion over the years has gradually eaten away the cliff faces here and periodically another cottage is lost or demolished as the coast line recedes inland.
The information centre is well worth visiting in connection with the history of cottages, it shows how much the area has changed over many years, particularly with respect to the cumulative coastal erosion clearly visible in old photographs and maps. On the day of our visit, there was a member of National Trust staff on duty here who was very knowledgeable about the area. We were advised that the one currently nearest the sea is due to be demolished within the next year to prevent a structural collapse impacting on people’s safety.
Certainly, glad that I have visited this area, the scenery is striking and photogenic, the cottages act as a reminder of coastal erosion through the years and the transitory nature of the natural earth.
Our scoring reflects the cottages as a standalone attraction.
