点评：Piazza Alta is the highest point in Sarnano and was the original core of the town. All the most important public buildings and the main church were located here and were encircled by defensive walls. It made sense - they could be more easily defended from this high vantage point.
The best way to get to Piazza Alta is to park your car in the ‘new town’ below and walk up. The best starting point is from Porta Brunforte, the original gateway into the town.
It is a reasonably steep climb, through pretty cobbled streets and narrow laneways, winding up to the piazza.
Unlike most Italian piazzas, there are no coffee shops or places to sit in the sun and take in the atmosphere. It is a quiet, small piazza. Its charm lies in that fact that you will find almost all of Sarnano’s historic buildings clustered here - the Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo dei Priori, Torre Civica and the 13th century church of Santa Maria di Piazza Alta. It looks like time has stood still.
It is worth noting that we did not find any of these buildings open when we visited recently. This may have been bad timing (we were there in the middle of the day on a weekend) but if you are hoping to find them open, I’d recommend checking opening times before going.
The newest addition to the piazza is a beautifully patina-ed, bronze sculpture group, Il Serafino di San Francesco. It depicts the traditional Sarnano legend of how St Francis settled a feud and gave the town its crest.
