点评:If you catch fish on a charter trip, you’ll forgive almost anything. However, I’ve been on enough charters to know that catching a fish is never guaranteed. On those charters, it’s the experience you have while trying to catch a fish that counts. So how did Akura stack up?
The booking and communications were excellent. It was easy to book and Tina went to some effort to get in touch with me about changing the date. She was there to greet us on the day and made us feel welcome.
Unfortunately, that was the best of it. Once on the boat we were told (not asked – and yes there is a difference) to sit down by the skipper (Boof) and given a very brief safety talk and a somewhat patronising and overly long lecture on how to wind in a fish. We were then told to stay sitting down and not to touch anything. He then said he was grumpy and not to talk to him so he could focus on catching fish. He vanished up to the fly bridge and that was the last I saw of him. He didn’t even come down to say thanks for coming or apologise for the lack of fish at the end of the charter. If a skipper is good and we catch fish, grumpy is fine, but this guy really needs to learn skills beyond driving the boat, because clearly he can’t always catch a fish. Perhaps he was embarrassed because the boat next to us were filleting their fish.
So, call me picky of you like, but I rather like a skipper to show some interest in the fishers who are paying $300 each for a fishing experience. Maybe some commentary on where he’s going and what he’s doing to try and target fish. Just so we know he’s trying and not just driving a standard lap of the FADs. Boof clearly believes otherwise. On the plus side, Dan the deck-hand was personable, gave some commentary, and was clearly doing his best.
The boat itself is very seaworthy handled the swell well but had minimum comforts and is a long way from their claim of “cruising in style”. The bottled water rolled around in the bottom of an old chilly bin and the sandwiches (thankfully only one each) were limp white bread with indistinguishable fillings. I strongly suggest you bring your own. Which is somewhat strange because Tina professed to be quite a foodie – check out your sandwiches Tina.
Our experience seems to be echoed by other reviews below where fish weren’t caught. If you’re feeling lucky and confident that luck will translate to fish, then go ahead and try these guys, but if you want a great overall experience look elsewhere.
