点评:We visited this museum because it was convenient (across from free trolly) and I was curious about the gift shop.
Impressively, the visit evolved into a very interesting experience. We spent 4 hours there, much more than expected.
First, the interior space is quite novel. The architect did a creative job, incorporating many design elements and textures. The Venetian plaster staircase is nothing like we have seen before. Elsewhere, panels of wood are so well matched that one piece seamlessly flows into the next.
Our docent Larry provided a helpful overview of various galleries which made us want to view and learn more.
The Museum offers what it’s name says with American items curated during the start of the Civil War and up to the Depression. Some pieces were intriguing whereas others were “nice to know about.” One gallery that fascinated me was the frame gallery consisting of intricately carved wood pieces. Pottery, lighting, furniture, metal work, illustrations, and other categories of items are well displayed with ample breathing room between each piece to enable one to appreciate its craftsmanship.
Before attending this museum, I can’t say I valued our Arts and Crafts period. How ignorant I was.
The cafe makes a Muffelatta approaching what Centrsl Grocery in New Orleans does (albeit a little dry).
