点评:It's part of the Australian story...
"I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!"
The writer, Isobel Marion Dorothea MacKellar was born in 1885. Her parents were Doctor (later Sir) Charles Kinnaird MacKellar and his wife, Marion. Dorothea taught herself to read by age 4. She attended Sydney University but didn't sit for an exam because her father believed, " too much concentration is no good for a girl".
With her father's forward thinking behind her... she was set to excel. (Yes, that WAS sarcasm). Dorothea found the English attitude of Australia being second rate to England was irritating. When visiting England in 1904, this is when she wrote the iconic poem known as My Country. It was published four years later in The Spectator.
Here in Gunnedah they celebrate Dorothea's work, by Australian standards... we may even consider it her best work It echos how many of us feel about our country.
The artist for this is Heesco... for many of us that seek out these silo arts and works, he is a well-known name. For me, I will never forget the time in Yarram where I was admiring one of his works saying how wonderful it would be to meet the artist - he overheard my comment and walked around the corner to say hello.
