点评:Congaree is listed by AllTrails as the 31st best National Park for hiking. I find this surprisingly high as I don't think it really has the quantity and diversity of trails that multiple other parks do. However, what it does have is one of the best and most accessible trails in the Boardwalk Trail which is its signature hike and listed as #1 in AllTrails.
The trail is an elevated boardwalk that runs anywhere from 6" to 6' above the ground as you transverse the park to keep you above the periodic flood waters. However, watch for flood conditions before you visit as even the boardwalk can sometimes be underwater. The trail is a 2.3-mile loop with only 13 feet of elevation gain again making this very easy and accessible and on average is completed in 40 minutes. However, what makes it so highly rated is that it provides incredible access to the forest, immersing you amongst the trees without concern for the ground conditions. You feel the enormity of the trees as you glide through it.
You also get to see the closely see the park's wildlife, a lot of lizards and bugs, but birds, turtles and alligators as well. While we did not see any snakes, I have seen pictures from those who have. The trail does provide access to other trails that do walk along the ground and extend deeper into the park. It also allows you to see one of its water features, Weston Lake, an oxbow lake where my wife and I saw an alligator. Finally, the wildlife is not the only thing you get to see on this trail. The boardwalk also meanders past several of the park's champion trees. These are enormous trees for the eastern US both volume and height. You won't believe the diameter.
Again, this is the best trail in the park that provides easy access to see the best features of the park. While I believe the best way to experience Congaree is by kayak or canoe, this is the best way if you can't get on the water.
