Cathedral State Park的点评
点评：Each October for years now my husband and I visit WV in the fall to see the natural wonders and the beautiful fall foliage and each year we try to add some new place. This year we added Cathedral State Park. It is the largest old growth forest and contains one of the largest stands of virgin hemlock in WV. It was once the site of the Brookside Resort built in 1882 . In 1922 the caretaker, Bronson Haas, purchased the site and sold it to WV with the stipulation that it remain uncut. And this is why we can enjoy the forest today. The average age of the forest is 350 years with some trees over 500 years old. These facts convinced me to go and see this wonder. Years ago we visited the redwoods in California and the sequoias in Yosemite so we wanted to see the eastern counterparts. Near the restrooms we met a local construction worker who was familiar with the trees and pointed out the hemlocks. Sadly we didn't spend enough time and just walked half of the cathedral trail. Although this site is near the highway, you can block out the traffic noise with the sounds of nature like the birds and squirrels scurrying. The trail was good mostly level dirt. We saw someone with a cane walking it with little trouble. There are picnic areas and the all important restrooms. This site made me recite The forest primeval with the murmuring pines and the hemlocks. So this year I saw eastern hemlocks and next year it is the giant hemlock stand or bust!
