点评:This memorial is in the Pioneer Gardens and currently the nearby bust is missing... it is fenced off - so hopefully just being upgraded. But why is the memorial here in the park and why was Dirk Hahn so important to the town.
Captain Dirk Meinerts Hahn (1804–1860) was a Danish-born sea captain who achieved lasting fame for his compassionate role in the settlement of South Australia. In late 1838, Hahn commanded the ship Zebra, transporting nearly 200 Prussian Old Lutherans fleeing religious persecution to Port Adelaide. Deeply moved by the plight, faith, and helplessness of his passengers, Captain Hahn went far beyond his maritime duties upon arrival by personally negotiating and securing 150 acres of fertile farming land in the Adelaide Hills from local landowners. In deep gratitude for his untiring efforts and genuine concern for their welfare, the pioneers named their new 1839 settlement Hahndorf (meaning "Hahn's Village"), which stands today as Australia’s oldest surviving German township and a major historic landmark.
