* Very good hike in a high Alpine valley with outstanding views of snow capped mountains
* Visit, explore hike and also bike in an area not frequented by tourists
* Ride a small little gondola with few, if any, foreign tourists
* See very very isolated but inhabited working farmhouses
CONS
* Hiking signage inadequate and not clear for the primary round trip circuit on this elevated Alpine plain
* Few fellows hikers for those who want to be sure that they are on the correct path
* Rare and uncommon choice for foreign non German speakers- staff do not understand English at all
“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because I had read about Sünnbuel and the Gemmi Pass for years and had wanted to try it, since I was in Kandersteg at the Oeschinen Lake anyway (see my previous parallel review).
We took the bus there and rode the gondola with the non English speaking staff.
We watched those who took bicycles and saw them start their treacherous and terrifying ride and descent.
We found sign posts for a two hour loop hike and wanted to try that (see my photos of the signs).
The views from the plain were fantastic.
We passed from afar and admired a real “Little House on the Prarie” truly isolated functioning homestead and farm.
The turnoff for the round trip was totally unclear and we were concerned and uncertain. The path also was not wide nor clearly marked as a hiking path. Only through the serendipity of finding two women relaxing by a river and asking them and they knowing AND understanding English that we were able to have confidence and certainty to continue our return to the upper gondola station.
Since the bus service is infrequent, we walked half an hour to return to the train station in Kandersteg.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Yes- it was covered by the Berner Oberland Pass.
WOULD “I VISIT THIS PLACE” AGAIN?
No
ADVICE
Be aware that there may be no other tourists, no one who understands English and poor uncertain signage deep into the round trip trail.
