点评:The castle itself is based around 4 Norman towers bonded together by Tudor walls then enlarged to incorporate a Great Hall and other rooms. The contents are entirely the property of the antique businessman owner who was gifted the building as a derelict project in the 1980s, so come from all sorts of different eras, nations and contexts. This leads to a deep disparity between the buildings and the confected interior...for example it includes pieces of modern film sets masquerading as a fireplace and doorways, a dismal collection of dolls prams and the owner's relatives' school uniforms. The labelling of these items is, to be kind, quirky and from a bygone age reflecting anachronistic social views. On a practical level the castle is unsuited to anyone with mobility or sight issues, and is extremely dark and dingy to the extent that keeping one' s footing is diffcult when negotiating the stairways. Low light levels meant we simply could not see any of the exhibits in the "torture chamber" of apparently plastic dolls in the process of being tortured, and outside of which was an exhortation that women "of a nervous disposition" should not enter. It was very difficult to appreciate the real history of the buildings and without a knowledgeable guide, it would be easy to assume that at least some contents and decor were original to Chillingham Castle in one era or another but they are not. There are honestly better presented and interpreted castles to visit in beautiful Northumberland.
