点评:There used to be seven gates in Fribourg, all named after locations they were leading to. Now only four still exist (Murten, Gotteron, Bourguillon and Berne), three (Pertuis, Romont, Payerne) were demolished in the 19th century. The most famous and most visited is the Berne Gate, especially since it is close to the Berne Bridge, one of Fribourg's top attractions.
As it was the case in Swiss towns, the gates were part of a tower. The one of the Berne Gate has a height of 24m and it was built, as it says on a plaque, in 1383. From here the towns fortifications continue with a wall up to the Cat's Tower. Further up is the 'Tour Rouge' (Red Tower).
The Berne Gate looks quite different from inside town (southeast), where there is a round arch, while on the side facing outwards (northwest) one sees a pointed arch with above it a coat of arms and a brattice for defense purposes. The State Coat of Arms of Fribourg shows a crown, flanked by two lions. It is a sandstone relief from the 17th century.
The gate is open to traffic and when there I saw a public bus going through, with not much space left on either side. By the Berne Gate the river Gotteron flows into the Sarine.
