点评:The Cathedral of Salerno, whose more appropriate name is "Cathedral of Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo and San Gregorio VII", is located in the heart of the historic center of the city of Salerno.
In Romanesque style, dating back to the 11th century, it was consecrated by Pope Gregory VII, whose tomb is preserved inside.
It is accessed via a staircase that leads to a door "protected" on the sides by sculptures of a lion and a lioness.
The atrium has a characteristic portico where 28 columns of re-used material, recovered from ancient Roman buildings, are beautifully displayed, and where decorations and structures that recall Norman and Arab motifs stand out.
Many Roman sarcophagi are placed against the walls.
The bell tower, dating back to the 12th century, stands out clearly.
The heart of the cathedral is undoubtedly the crypt, where in 1081 the relics of St. Matthew and the Holy Martyrs of Salerno were placed.
This is an incredible church we stumbled across while meandering through the street of Salerno historic center.
The outside is very beautiful but inside it's breathtaking.
There is so much painted, gilded, carved, frescoed, worked architecture every which way you turn.
The artwork here will blow your mind, don't miss out on this outstanding church!
