点评:What a hidden, precious resource! We stopped on a dreary, very cold afternoon hoping to apply for an access pass, and wound up having a great time! We were able to talk to super-knowledgeable Ranger Todd and the awesome front desk volunteers about the area's history. They described its previous reputation as an industrial superfund site, its clean-up and reclamation as a wildlife refuge, and its current status as one of the only undeveloped preserved areas on the U.S. side of the Detroit River.
The John D. Dingle Jr. Visitor Center is new and beautiful with great views of the waterfront and surroundings. It features educational exhibits of native wildlife and has a small theater with showings of two interesting short videos.
There are trails for people of all abilities that loop around the refuge, and there is a spectacular fishing pier that extends far out into the river with benches for resting. Fishing rods were available at the front desk in the visitor center if you forgot your own.
We'll definitely be back again when the weather is warmer!

John D. Dingle Jr.
