点评:My absolute top tip is visit on a Tuesday. No queues. No crowds. The site is officially closed …. but stay with me.
You can still walk around and see everything, unimpeded by other tourists and save yourself the EUR10 entrance fee. Sure, you cant get quite as close to the stones but on an 80-20 rule it’s an even better deal than my Stone Henge top tip (slow down on the A303).
Now I grant you that we didn’t get access to the visitor centre but I can guess the key points:
- A few boards with artists impressions of Neanderthal man
- The stones are jolly heavy
- They used an Earthwork technique to raise the stones
- No one is 100% sure what the temples were for.
If you need a pee afterwards treat yourself to a little drive down to Marsaxlokk, a beautiful fishing village with free parking, spotless public loos and delicious ice cream
and coffee shops. Skip Costa and try Sottozero next door: much better!
Other Heritage Malta sites are great (Fort Elmo worth every penny) but for anything but a hardcore stone admirer, Tuesday without the queues is the way to go.
