点评:Potentially, Wivey pool is wonderful - but the reality is that the lifeguards make the experience awful as - yes, to quote a previous writer - they are over-zealous and authoritarian to a point of discomfort, and every time we have visited there's been a telling off for something - adults or children. All minor, and we are the most courteous people you'd find with zero tolerance of rudeness or upset to others.
This culminated in a guard really upsetting my 8 year-old grandson needlessly: he cried with embarrassment on and off for the rest of the day and has begged me never to make him go back there.
We had been in the pool 1.5 HOURS, playing mostly in the deep end - 1 gran, 2 children. My grandson has a 50 metre swim certificate and swims weekly at school at least. Until yesterday he felt he was a confident, sound swimmer - though not a stylish, textbook one. I got out of the pool 5 minutes beforehand as I was cold but sat on the side watching him as he wanted to jump in some more and swim up to the shallow end to get a football. A lifeguard who has known us personally as a family for 7+ years as she attended the same dance group as my grand-daughter, sat down at the side and spoke to my grandson: I assumed because she knew him and was saying something kind. My grand-daughter approached them. My grandson then swam across the pool and back... the guard spoke to hm again and he then got out, walking towards me in tears.... Because the lifeguard had told him she didn't think he was a strong enough swimmer for the deep end so needed to be in the shallow end. He'd been in that pool for 1.5 hours and was TIRED. His swim wasn't stylish - but he did a breast stroke without touching the ground across the pool and back - ??? Was it because he couldn't float as she'd asked that she judged him as incompetent??? Who knows - the decision wasn't explained.
All he heard was that he'd done something wrong. Up until that moment he was a happy swimmer who thought he was really good at tricks and jumps and swimming and got great joy from it.
I spoke to both the lifeguard and her manager. They both started to quote safety regs - and that just was NOT the issue.
I am a teacher - and was a qualified swimming teacher for many years. I TAKE ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUE WITH SAFETY MEASURES - BUT HOW THEY WERE ENFORCED WAS APPALLING. There are two important facts to be considered when dealing with children:
1. They do not understand instructions in the same way as adults. My grandson was apparently asked to do a star float for 30 seconds... he had no idea what this was, and he didn't know why he was being asked to swim across the pool - he thought he'd done something wrong and was panicking.
2. You should NEVER - EVER - issue complex instructions to a child of 8 when they attend - as REQUIRED - with a competent adult. I was a short distance away, watching them and this lifeguard knew me and my relationship to the children.
Why on earth didn't she turn to me?? Had she done so I would have explained to my grandson what the issue was and what was required of him and got back in the pool to reassure him. Stupid, thoughtless behaviour caused needless upset. My grandson got out of bed last night to find his swimming certificates and woke me up to ask me to take them to Wivey Pool to show them he wasn't lying. Unforgivable.
We won't be back.
