Amazing canyon river trek in a classic Costa Rican gorge

点评：What an amazing off the beaten path experience! I thought we were going to a guide company to take us to Juan Castro de Blanco on a guided hike. Instead, and very randomly, we ended up doing the most authentic Costa Rican canyon river tour. La Vieja Adventures is a family run company that based it operations literally out of their house, literally in the back yard. You start by hiking down a steep switchback to the cliff’s edge. Then you climb down a series of well positioned ladders that bring you to the bottom of the canyon and the La Vieja River. From there you boulder, wade and slosh your way upstream to reach some absolutely amazing views of millions of years old deep canyon gorges with crazy striations and dotted with lush ferns and moss. The river flow can be brisk. The rocks can be slick. You must be in good shape and willing to be adventurous and comfortable with being wet. Dress appropriately. Especially the shoes. No bugs. Sun is muted mostly. At the bottom if this deep gorge, it is very junglesque. This pushed the comfort zone of my wife but she did it. My son and I loved it. My wife was glad she was obliviously ignorant of what awaited here. This was so cool and so welcome after doing so many of the less exciting touristy stuff. Highly recommend this.
