点评：Shame on us Brits. I'm all set to splurge on mince pies and Christmas pudding for our school's English department's Christmas bazar, when, wouldn't you know it, I'm on the hunt for a parking spot smaller than Santa's chimney in front of Home From Home at 148 Route d'Arlon, Strassen. And what happens? A Mini Countryman (very British-looking with two blokes inside that flip me the bird) zips in and cuts me off, forcing me to stay right where I am.
So, here I am, stuck in car limbo, when the shop manager comes running, sounding the alarm that I'm on borrowed time because a delivery van is incoming. I'd have to vacate their parking turf pronto.
Fair enough, but wouldn't a bit of customer finesse be more appropriate here? I was expecting a shopkeeper with a bit of savoir-faire to point me to an alternative spot and maybe offer a cheeky sorry for the inconvenience caused.
No such luck with these folks. All they cared about was giving me the boot. Off I go, backing my car into a very busy Route d'Arlon. As any local here knows, trying to navigate Route d'Arlon backwards at 4 pm on a Friday afternoon is is a feat worth a round of applause.
Lesson learned: from now on, I'm sticking to local shops, where the Luxembourgish bakeries not only dish out delicious Buche de Noël but also sprinkle some friendliness on the side. Farewell, Home From Home. This Christmas, our department's festive delights will be steeped in the traditions of French and Luxembourgish flair, and we're set to savour every single moment.
