点评:This is an English Heritage site with on-site parking. Toilet facilities but no sit down café. As I arrived at Wroxeter Roman City two coach loads of school kids also turned up. Thankfully it is a big site so I was able to negotiate my way around the site to avoid the rug rats.
For Roman ruins this was the first time I’d ever seen them above ground, the arches to the central building were incredible.
In 2011 there was a project which was shown on TV where some local craftsmen attempted to build one of the Roman houses using the methods, tools and materials that would have been used by the Romans, and this reconstruction was part of the exhibits to visit. They even had some of the Roman treasures to feel and touch although I suspect the latrine brush (used instead of paper) was a reproduction – a sponge tied to a wooden stick. This would be washed in water and then soaked in vinegar to disinfect it ready for the next patron to the latrines. The pottery that the Romans brought with them they had got on route from Gaul (France) and were a very refined pottery that felt almost like Bakelite but better. It was impressive. The Romans discovered jet jewelry made in Whitby and that was much sought after by the rich.
