点评:Watching a sea turtle come ashore to lay her eggs should be one of those rare experiences that stays in your memory for all the right reasons. Unfortunately, our visit to Turtle Watch turned out to be memorable for all the wrong ones.
My wife and I arrived expecting a quiet, respectful experience where visitors could observe nature without disturbing it. We understood that patience was necessary and that protecting the turtles should always come first. What we did not expect was the complete lack of consideration shown by so many visitors.
The organisation of the groups was confusing from the beginning. We were given numbered tickets, supposedly to control the number of people entering the beach. However, having a number on a piece of paper means very little if nobody properly manages the crowds. There was a long wait, and the experience involved sitting around for hours before finally getting the opportunity to see a turtle.
Visitors are clearly instructed to use only red lights and keep their phones switched off or away. These rules exist for a very good reason: the turtles are extremely sensitive to artificial light and human disturbance. Yet people constantly ignored them. Phone screens were lighting up, people were checking social media, playing games and using their phones despite repeated reminders from the guides.
But the most disappointing part came when the turtle finally appeared.
Our group was very small, just my wife and me. Yet when it was our turn, people from other groups rushed forward, pushed past others and completely ignored the group arrangements. Around 30 people seemed more interested in getting the perfect photograph than respecting the animal or allowing others to enjoy the moment.
The same situation happened again with the following groups. Even families with children were pushed aside by people trying to get closer for photographs. It was honestly uncomfortable to watch.
What should have been a peaceful encounter with wildlife became a competition between tourists trying to get the best picture. At that point, I started wondering whether some people had come to appreciate nature at all.
I also feel that the guides and organisers need to take much more responsibility for controlling the situation. Repeating instructions is simply not enough when visitors continue to ignore them. Clear rules need to be properly enforced, especially during such a sensitive wildlife experience.
I completely understand that this is a conservation project and that the people involved may be volunteers doing their best. However, if visitors are allowed to behave this way, what is the real purpose of all those rules?
The turtle and the natural surroundings were beautiful. Sadly, human behaviour completely overshadowed what should have been a special experience.
My advice: Bring plenty of patience, some water and perhaps a book to keep yourself occupied during the long wait. A long-sleeved shirt is also a good idea, as it can get windy on the beach at night.
I appreciate the importance of turtle conservation, but based on our experience, I cannot recommend this particular tourist experience. Wildlife deserves respect, and visitors should be given the opportunity to observe it without turning the beach into a crowd of people fighting for photographs.
