点评:This museum complex includes the last remaining example of a 'monitorial schoolroom', built to promote the radical teaching methods of Victorian educator Joseph Lancaster, which were adopted all over the British Empire and beyond from the mid 19th century. There is also a rare example of a 'galleried' classroom, like an early lecture theatre, and the incredibly well preserved house of Victorian Headmaster Mr Fitch and his family... We were lucky to be given a personal guided tour by staff member Angela, whose knowledge and infectious enthusiasm really brought the history alive. There were also two exhibitions to visit whilst we were there: a wealth of contemporary school related books, objects and other teaching aids, and a display of items relating to the life of the late Queen Mother, who grew up nearby. A fascinating place to visit and a chance to learn about some of the more unexpected teaching methods of our 19th Century predecessors!
