The Good, the Bad, and the Silly
Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio的点评
点评:Overall I'll say the experience was just average--it's not a must-see in Costa Rica given the other great reserves they have and the hassle one has to go through. But it is the easiest to get to from San José if you are limited on time.
First, the good. It's really two attractions in one: a nature reserve and beaches. There are a lot of animals in the park, and we saw both types of sloth, snakes, 2 of the three kinds of monkeys in CR, and even a deer. All of this without a guide. I don't think you need one really, although having a good pair of binoculars really helps. There are 3 beaches we went to as well, 2 of which were really nice and enjoyable for a swim. The other was a bit rocky and the waters choppier. They do have some rather poor (and highly crowded) changing rooms, but I'd recommend wearing your swimsuit.
The really bad part are the crowds. There isn't a good way to avoid them, although you can go early when the park opens and it'll be better. A lot of locals especially seem to come and just go to the beaches (although to do this they pass through the main trails of the reserve).
And finally the silly. The park has very strict regulations that one cannot bring PLASTIC bottles inside. They will, however, let you bring glass or metal water bottles! And I seem to recall they sell water in plastic bottles in the cafeteria. Why? Either ban plastic full-stop, or ban all outside water bottles. And they are strict, too: they examine every bag on entry. This is a ridiculous and unnecessary hassle and creates a mess at entry as people are stopped and argue with the guards. If you bring a glass/metal bottle, they do have a semi-hidden sink in the cafeteria where you can refill it.
