From Red Elephants to White Sands: Our Kenyan Safari Adventure

点评：September 2024 marked one of our most memorable times traveling in Kenya, mostly because we were yearning for a bush-to-beach safari vacation after being blown away by the enormous beauty of the Maasai Mara earlier this year. While we knew what we wanted to see (the red elephants of Tsavo and later the white sandy beaches of Diani), settling on a venue proved a bit harder than we thought. But all this was before we shared our ideas with Jacky and left her to curate a travel itinerary that suited us. As always, working with her able team, she quickly came back with options and recommendations for a 2-night self-drive safari to Voi and 4-night stay in Diani. The venues were the stunning Voi Wildlife Lodge located in Tsavo East and Diani Sea Resort in Kwale County. Breaking from the past, where our logistics to these venues would either be by train or air, we decided to drive and experience the Nairobi-Mombasa (A109) road as we had never used it before. While this would have made first-time drivers anxious about the drive, Jacky was able to negotiate a travel insurance policy covering us for the drive to the above-mentioned venues.
Our first day was to be spent in Voi and included an early morning drive (349 km) from Nairobi to the Voi Wildlife Lodge. Jacky shared informative updates about the routes throughout the trip, given that it was our first time driving on that side of the country. Upon arrival, we were quickly taken through the check-in procedures and ushered into the main restaurant, which is located directly in front of a watering hole. This was exactly the sight that we wished for: watching herds of elephant families, both adults and calves, buffalos, antelopes, lions and other wild animals roam the plains of Tsavo East National Park, making their way intriguingly to the watering hole right in front of us. To top the experience, Jacky had managed to book us into the park, where we drove for 2 hours and spent time spotting elephants, giraffes, and a variety of birds. In addition, she had also organized a superior room located next to a pier and watering hole, enabling us to observe the majestic animals from our balconies deep into the night. These are some of the reasons why we always leave her to organize our trips. The following morning, we checked out and began our 187 km drive to Diani Sea Resort. This was the second time visiting the lodge for a number of reasons: a) its ambience is extremely welcoming and chilled, b) despite there being several visitors, it never felt crowded, c) they have a great bar, and their cocktails and beers are truly well done, d) the beach is quite long, secured by an askari 24/7, and has great wide views of the ocean, and e) the blend of German-Swahili and other dishes in their menu made the meals an experience to look forward to. Upon checking in, everything felt familiar, relaxed, and organized. Diani Sea Lodge and Diani Sea Resort were our homes for 4 nights and 5 days, and we have enjoyed it every time thanks to Tranquil Expeditions and Wellness, who first recommended it to us.
Our final day began with an early departure from Diani to Voi Wildlife Lodge, where we arrived just in time for lunch. By this time, the restaurant staff had reserved our favorite table, and the lodge still booked us in the same superior room. However, we were treated to a much bigger surprise: a sundowner set up on the pier with our own professional butler who served us snacks, wine and shared with us amazing tales of Tsavo . This was truly breathtaking as we had the best views of the sun setting behind the Taveta hills on one side and, on the other, herds of elephants, buffalos, waterbucks, and antelopes making their way to and from the drinking hole. This was our first sundowner ever, a gift from Tranquil Expeditions, and its execution was flawless. As we reflected about the trip that night, the highlights were many and memorable, and I’m grateful to Jacky and Diana for all the effort they put into organizing our expeditions.
