Sand, Sea, and Wagging Tails: One of Devon’s Best Dog-Friendly Beaches

点评：Bigbury-on-Sea is a bit of a jackpot if you’re after a dog-friendly beach with food and drink options within stumbling distance. You can either stroll across to Burgh Island and the Pilchard Inn, where they serve excellent chips (the sort you pretend you’ll “share” but don’t), alongside a solid selection of lagers and other beverages… or simply pop into the Venus Café just below the main car park. Both are well worth a visit — though I recommend doing both if your waistband allows.
In summer, the middle section of the beach becomes a dog-free zone, which is perfect for families who want to pitch up with beach tents and small humans in tow, without the added excitement of sandy Labradors charging through their sandwiches.
Luckily, dogs don’t lose out entirely — the left and right sections of the beach welcome them all year round, and there’s plenty of space for a proper run, a paddle, or just a bit of dignified stick-carrying.
For those who fancy getting wet on purpose, there are surfboards and wetsuits available to hire, and if you’re brave (or deluded) enough to think you can stand up on one, I believe tuition is available too. The surf school next to the Venus Café has been around as long as I’ve been visiting — over four years now (as of 2025) — which must mean they’re doing something right.
