点评:We visited Mt. Elgon / Sipi region in August 2025 in a group of 2 people (me and my mother) with a quite extensive program, which was fully planned and booked with Mount Elgon Trekkers. The program included a 5-day trek to Mt. Elgon (Wagagai peak) on Sipi-Bushiyi trail, and an additional day with activities in Sipi: abseiling near the highest (~100m) waterfall, several hours of rock climbing and a sunset viewpoint walk. The company also organized for us individual transfer from/to Entebbe. All communication with Ramazan via Whatsapp was absolutely clear and transparent, his professionalism is exceptional (as well as his great mood!), and the whole trip was almost impeccably executed.
Now to some details.
THE TREK ITSELF is stunning. As one of the previous commenters already posted the distance/altitude data day-by-day, I can only confirm it - my GPS watch showed approximately the same values. The first 1.5 days and the last 1.5 days are in a tropical rainforest, and, as August is a "semi-dry" season, we were thoroughly showered 3 days out of 5 (well, it's called RAINforest, isn't it? :)). However, as the altitude on these days is low, it is still quite warm and being soaked is not as dangerous as it normally is in the mountains. But keep in mind that rains are heavy here, and everything will be wet unless packed very thoroughly (and it is still not a 100% guarantee - we had to air-dry our paper money bills afterwards X)). The rainforest itself is not dangerous, but lush, and beautiful, unlike anything else, so if you (like we used to) have a prejudice about all types of venomous insects and snakes living in the jungle - it is not like that here. There are occasional lines of fire ants, but they are well-telegraphed and the ranger guides always point them out. And, honestly, their bites are not painful, just a minor inconvenience. We have not seen a SINGLE MOSQUITO on the trek - so don't be afraid to sleep in the tent! The rainforest trails in the rain do get very muddy and slippery though. It is not a problem on the ascent as Sipi trail is gaining altitude very gently (and that's why we did not experience any signs of altitude sickness), but the descent on Bushiyi trail is very steep, and adding rain and mud to the equation makes it very unsafe. I must underline that it is NOT a guides' or company's fault - they complained about the dangerous conditions to the authorities multiple times, but the park administration is reluctant to change anything. As I see now, a much better option would be to do Sipi - Wagagai peak - Sipi trail in 5-6 days, and skip the dangerous descent on Bushiyi, which is especially unexpected after a nice and pleasant Sipi trail. This is basically the only issue with the trip that we had, and I will be writing to UWA about this, so, hopefully, the situation will change eventually.
The vegetation and views in the high-altitude zone (~2700+m) are absolutely stunning and nothing like any other non-tropical mountains. The reason is high humidity: it was very strange to cross a bog at the altitude of 4+km!! The multitudes of local plants (especially the endemic Senecio elgonensis) make the landscape look otherworldly - these views are nothing like "classical" high mountains (Karakoram, Pamirs, Himalayas) which are basically high-altitude rocky/icy deserts. Here, on the contrary, the nature is alive and flourishing, there are everlasting flowers everywhere, and the air is full of fragrant smells. The night sky is something else, truly.
We were very impressed by THE ORGANIZATION OF THE TREK. We (a group of 2) were accompanied by 2 extremely attentive and caring ranger guides (Isaiah and Kazbat), an amazing cook (Sudi, you are wonderful!) and 3 porters. The company provided us with a 2-person tent, 2 inflatable mats and even 2 pillows (they also offered us sleeping bags, but we brought our own). There was frost on the ground at night in the highest camp (3.7km), but the provided tent was warm enough to protect from it. The porters carried our belongings, food and bottled water for the whole trip, led by Sudi independently from us, so on the trek we were accompanied only by the ranger guides. The leading guide Isaiah's local knowledge, tactfulness, presentation and speaker skills are unmatched, you could ask any question about local wildlife and customs and get almost a professor-level lecture in response. We were served 3 meals a day, on long days the hot lunch was prepared in the morning and carried by the porters to the lunch place. The food was varied and very tasty, with plenty of meat and vegetables! The cook was very attentive as well. A minor advice would be to be prepared to tip the crew - not much, but it is expected (as tipping is not common in our country, we almost got into a slight misunderstanding).
ABSEILING, ROCK CLIMBING and SUNSET WALK in Sipi the day after the trek were a magnificent ending to this amazing trip. Out of these 3 activities I would definitely recommend everyone to try abseiling - although it may look scary for people who are not accustomed to the equipment, it is absolutely safe, as the equipment is legit and the team knows what they are doing and are very responsible. Seeing the enormous mass of water just falling past you up close is an experience like nothing else. Although this is not a rainforest, be prepared to get wet again :)))
Rock climbing spot has amazing views, they provide chalk and shoes, as well as all the belaying equipment. They also lead climb the routes for you to organize top rope and belay you, so, again, it is very safe and no previous experience/knowledge is necessary. Even if you are a beginner (like us), there are still easy routes to climb. The team (and Ramazan) was also very supportive and cheering for our success, no rushing. Sunset viewing is also a must-see - even if the sky is not clear (as was in our case), the panoramic view from that specific spot is full 360 degrees. You can see the lush inhabited valley below, the terrace-like slopes of Mt. Elgon and the main Sipi waterfall - all from the same spot with bird's eye perspective!
Additionally we would like to thank Ramazan and his team for the organization of my mother's birthday party in local style. You've been very kind, nice and open with us. Thank you very much for these unforgettable memories!!!
ALL IN ALL, this was an absolutely amazing and eye-opening experience. Thank you, Ramazan, Isaiah, Kazbat, Sudi and all the other countless people who made it possible - you've showed us your land, its beauty and liveliness, the warm and kind nature of local's hearts and minds. After all, this is why people travel - in search of wonders, both of nature and human soul...
