An Extraordinary Guide

点评：David was our guide for a tour of Calakmul and Balamku. It was an extraordinary day.
David is knowledgeable: his knowledge extends from his time as a child learning ancestral knowledge of the region’s plants, trees, animals, birds, insects, and history from his grandfather. We asked about if his kids are as interested and he said yes, they have begun to borrow his binoculars to go bird watching on their own. And he carries several very heavy books in his backpack and I think he used every book with us, opening them to a page when we had a question about trees, plants, hydrology, history. He has a deep respect and reverence for the history of the Maya and what they left behind for us.
David is a fantastic companion. We like to have fun and we joke a lot, especially on a drive, and he could hang with us. He is incredibly sweet and friendly. We also had conversations on more serious topics like the new development of the region and he shared some honest and thoughtful opinions. We are experienced with many parts of the Yucatan Peninsula and we learned so much from his thoughts.
David also helped us after we’d parted ways. We couldn’t find an ATM in Xpujil that took our card, and we wanted a good place to eat. He sent us to a wonderful family taco stand for some mind blowing al pastor, and guided us to an ATM. That was above and beyond.
On our next trip to the region, he is the first person I will contact to get recommendations for hotels and places to explore.
