点评：I wanted to like it! But....
Monschau had been on my bucket list for years, and finally we went for an overnight stay this August.
The good points:
Historical authentic buildings, with the lovely Rur river running thru the center of town. Timbered houses, cobblestone streets, living history. Some lovely outdor cafés.
Some very photogenic corners and streets, like Brugges, disneyland beautiful.
The bad points:
This tourist-trap town only operates on weekends, if you go outside of summer or duing the week I'm sure 90% of establishments will be closed. As it was in August, on Friday, restaurant shut down at 7 or 8pm, ice cream shops only open Saturday afternoon.
Absolutely NO grocery store, drink distributor, anyplace to pick up a bottle of water or a snack after a day of hiking or cycling, if your hotel does not have an all-day restaurant kitchen. Bring your water and snacks with you!
We went to one of the main cafés with a beautiful terrace, ordered a 50cl beer, and wanted something to nibble alongside, peanuts, chips, a plate of cheese cubes, anything... we were told no! all you can have is the menu! Not a single pretzel crumb or crust of bread to go with our half liter of beer at 6 euros the glass (only thing available would be , carpaccio or hamburger or ceasar salad - for 20 euros).
I was surprised on arrival that the town is down in a deep canyon, below the surrounding area, it feels oppressive, dismal and dark, heading down. into the town from the Belgian border.
After coming here I understand why the town is not more appreciated or talked about locally. It has potential, I wanted to like it, but was greatly disappointed.
