I cannot stress this enough: avoid Meriados for your own safety.
We rented a two-person sea canoe yesterday from the Meriados Watersports station on Agios Gordios beach at 4pm (€50 for two hours). The staff gave us basic instructions but no lifejackets. Within minutes the canoe began taking on water. It eventually sank and capsized, throwing our belongings into the sea (5m depth). We managed to recover a bag by diving to our absolute limit.
We attempted to continue but the canoe was already half sunk and capsized again. With no help from staff (who weren’t even watching), we had no choice but to swim for over 40 minutes, pushing the canoe back to shore. We are strong swimmers, but if we hadn’t been this could have ended very badly.
Back on the beach, the staff looked surprised and casually asked if we were “okay” with a thumbs up. When they drained the canoe, water poured out for over five minutes. From their reaction, it was clear something had been wrong with the boat beforehand and it should never have been rented out. No apology, no refund, just the two of them checking the canoe and speaking in Greek.
This was a terrifying experience, and we are still shaken. If you are with children, teenagers, or if you are not a very strong swimmer, please avoid Meriados Watersports, it is unsafe and could be life-threatening. The Greek lady who runs our accommodation said we should have called the police to report them, but shocked at the time we hadn’t.
