点评:I saw ‘Strictly Murder’ there and was completely bowled over by this wonderful gem of a place. First time I’ve been there.
Hidden in amongst the leafy backstreets of Hall Green, an affluent suburb of South Birmingham, is this tiny theatre that is in a wonderful time warp. The ground floor theatre was built in 1950 by the theatre members. Due to post-war-time restrictions the members couldn’t pay labourers to build the theatre, so they built it themselves brick-by-brick. This 1950 theatre is completely intact, still with its original cinema seating that I assume was salvaged at the time from a nearby closed cinema. The entrance lobby and bar date were constructed in 1970 and appear to be completely intact in style; soft furnishings, dangling glass lamp shades, geometric patterned carpet that resembles the famous Shining movie carpet. And finally, a soft upholstered bar counter front – I know it’s a crazy, but it was a fashion to put a cushioned fronts onto bar counters in the 1970s. The other all effect is a warm relaxed welcoming feel to the theatre. This is incomplete contrast to many other theatres that try to make their reception areas ‘trendy’ with stripped back walls and furniture, such that they feel cold and unwelcome.
Next are the staff. They are all volunteer members of the theatre who are just so friendly and welcoming. Any query and they couldn’t do enough to help. When I asked about the history of the place, they gave me a brief tour of the upstairs theatre – how about that for service? There are two theatres here, with the second one upstairs that is used for bare-bone style theatre productions.
The performance – all performed by members of the Hall Green Little Theatre - was superb. The theatre set itself was professional and on a par with other theatres.
Overall, going to Hall Green Little Theatre was a joy from start to finish. It left me with the warm feeling I have when I wear my favourite woolly jumper on a cold winter’s morning.
