点评:The best archaeological finds from Greece usually end up in the National Museum of Athens. What is left to the regions, where the excavations had taken place, are mostly objects of minor importance. This is also the case with Syros. People with interest in ancient Greece might still find it interesting to visit the rather small Archaeological Museum of Syros, located in the Town Hall. The entrance is to the left or northwestern side of the building.
The fee for a visit is 3 € (at the much richer Archaeological Museum of Naxos, where I had been to a few days before, there was no fee). Four rooms can be seen here. Rooms 1 and 3 have finds of historical times from Syros and some other Cycladic islands, mainly Amorgos. Among the exhibits are grave steles, reliefs from sarcophagi, a headless female statue from Asia Minor, Protocorinthian vases or marble portraits of Drusus and Agrippina. Covered is the period from Archaic to Roman times.
Room 2 is dedicated to the Early Cycladic Civilisation (3rd millennium BC), especially with finds from the Syrian excavation sites at Kastri and Chalandriani in the north of the island. The archaeologist in charge at these sites had been Christos Tsountas, to whom room 4 is dedicated. A specialist in Mycenaean Culture he is also considered as father of the studies on the 'Cycladic Civilisation', an expression which most probably goes back to him as well.
