I took my 9 year old daughter (first time riding) on a trek with Karamu Trail Track, and it turned into an absolute nightmare due to reckless behavior from a staff member and a complete lack of safety protocols.
During the ride, an older gentleman instructor struck my daughter’s horse, causing it to bolt uncontrollably. She was thrown off and suffered a broken shoulder along with contusions to the right side of her body. Instead of immediately stopping the ride or checking to find a missing rider, the group ahead had no urgency in the matter, and the response from staff was beyond unacceptable:
❌ No first aid was provided—not even a basic assessment. There was no first aid kit available, meaning I had nothing to support my daughter’s injured arm. As a trained medical professional, I was shocked by the complete lack of safety measures. At the very least, a company offering treks should have basic first aid provisions readily accessible.
❌ The instructor pressured me to move my daughter, despite her being in severe pain and unable to move. I repeatedly told him something was wrong with her, yet he dismissed my concerns, insisting it was just a bruise and that she would be fine. I felt completely alone in this traumatic situation, with a total lack of empathy and disregard for what my daughter was truly experiencing.
❌ When I refused and insisted on assessing her properly, he became hostile.
❌ I asked him what their company procedures were around an emergency situation like this...he told me to "just get her back on the horse" despite her obvious injury.
❌ No rescue vehicle was sent, even though their website promises one if required.
❌ No ambulance was called, despite an obvious serious injury.
❌I was forced to walk for approximately 20 minutes with my daughter, who was in extreme pain. The conditions were incredibly hot, and she was struggling to walk due to being in shock. Much of the terrain was downhill, and she kept losing her footing. Both of us were distressed and overwhelmed by the situation.
❌ I had phoned them with an update on the situation and since then I have received zero follow-up since the accident.
To make matters worse, I overheard the older male instructor talking about me and my injured child behind our backs, instead of showing any concern or professionalism. The lack of empathy and accountability is disgraceful.
Their website states they provide first aid and emergency assistance—this is a complete lie. If your child gets injured on one of their treks, do not expect help. The staff are not trained in basic safety procedures, and their attitude toward injuries is shockingly negligent.
If I could give zero stars, I would. Avoid this place at all costs—it is unsafe, unprofessional, and dangerous. I will be reporting this incident to WorkSafe NZ.
