An important but heavily reconstructed Byzantine churches in Thessaloniki
Holy Church of Saint Demetrius, Patron Saint of Thessalonica的点评
点评:An interesting stop-off on our tour of Byzantine churches of the city. The church has been heavily reconstructed following a major fire in 1917 in which much of the original fabric of the building including the majority of its mosaics was lost (although you can see photographs of these at the Museum of Byzantine Culture a 15 minute bus ride away) so much of what one sees is new. A few of the original mosaics around the apse have survived so look out for these, although they are not in excellent condition. There were also various carvings and fragments of stonework set out in the yard to the north although no explanation offered as to their date or significance.
Worth noting that the crypt isn’t always ope and accessible, and we were unfortunately not able to visit this part of the building, which was disappointing.

值得注意的是,地下室并非一直开放,我们很遗憾没能参观这部分建筑,这令人失望。
