点评:We had grand plans to visit the legendary Sparta… only to find ourselves face-to-face with King Leonidas – in statue form – awkwardly parked in front of a football stadium. Not exactly the epic welcome we had in mind.
The “archaeological site” turned out to be a handful of dusty stones, currently in the middle of what looked like a very confused reconstruction project (judging by the bulldozer tracks through the amphitheater). No signs, no people, no clue where we were supposed to be looking. We spent more time wondering where Sparta was than actually seeing it.
Moral of the story? Please read the reviews and actually look at the photos before you go. Don’t let the word “Sparta” fool you – this is not the movie set of 300.
In the end, we had to laugh at how gullible we were, falling for the myths and legends like true romantics.
Fortunately, nearby Mystras saved the day – absolutely breathtaking monasteries and sacred ruins that gave us the historical magic we were craving. Total redemption. Sparta who?
