点评:On a busy weekend, I was expecting crowds inside the Basilica di San Petronio, but was pleasantly surprised: it was rather manageable to admire its solemn interior. How beautiful it looks after the restoration! The work is still under way, but is mostly complete at this point. I think the stained glass windows were recently restored - they looked too “new” to me. The entrance to the Basilica is free, but if you want to take a close look inside the Cappella Bolognoni (Chapel of the Magi), you have to pay €3 and I don’t know what for because you can perfectly see the frescoes without going inside the chapel.
It is interesting that Jacopo della Quercia’s reliefs of the San Petronio door inspired Michelangelo’s frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. Ross King describes the connection in his wonderful book “Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling”.
