Historically important Gothic church in Old Town
St. Jakobskirche的点评
点评：St. Jacob's Church (St. Jakobskirche) is an impressive Gothic church located along Klostergasse. It was constructed between 1311-1484 and has famously been a stopping point of the for pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela (known locally as Jakobsweg). The church has varying opening times throughout the year and has an entry fee of €3.50 per adult.
The exterior architecture with its two 50+ metre towers of St. Jacob is nice. However, it is the interior that most memorable. It is traditional Gothic with high vaulted ceiling and narrow nave with side aisles. They main 'Altar of the Twelve Apostles, the works of Friedrich Herlin (1466) is very impressive, as are the stained glass windows just behind.
There are other interesting things to see including the remarkable Holy Blood Altarpiece by the master woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider (1499-1505) upstairs and behind the organ. This delicately carved altarpiece is special, worth taking a seat to enjoy viewing for a few minutes.
On the whole, we spent around 25 minutes visiting St. Jacob's and would gladly pay the entry to visit again next time in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It is a highly recommendable place to visit for anyone who appreciates Gothic era masterpieces and architecture.
