点评:The Groeninge Museum is a compact museum with a thoughtfully curated collection of artworks that can comfortably be explored in a couple of hours. I particularly appreciated the excellent information boards in every room, which provided useful context and helped bring the collection to life.
Unfortunately, my overall experience was significantly diminished by the overly officious approach of one female attendant. I was chastised for stepping onto a perimeter carpet while looking closely at a painting, despite there being no signage indicating this was prohibited. Shortly afterwards, I was also told not to point at an artwork while drawing my teenage daughter’s attention to some small details — despite being nowhere near touching the painting.
At 51 years old, I found this treatment rather patronising. Museums exist so that people can engage with and appreciate art, and I left feeling reluctant to examine the works as closely as I would have liked for fear of being reprimanded again. As David Hockney’s famous badge says: “End Bossiness Soon.” A little less policing and a little more encouragement for visitors to enjoy the art would go a long way.
A worthwhile collection, but sadly the atmosphere created by this interaction prevented me from enjoying the museum as much as I should have.
