A Gem in the Heart of Woodend

点评：Stumbled upon Holgate Brewhouse during a day trip to Woodend in March 2026, and it immediately became one of the highlights of the trip.
The property is anchored by a beautifully restored historic pub on the main street — worth a look in itself —, but we made our way through to the working modern brewery behind it and settled in for a beer among the tanks and brewing equipment. There's something genuinely satisfying about drinking well-crafted beer in the space where it's actually made, and Holgate pulls it off without feeling gimmicky.
The Taproom runs 16 taps of limited and special release beers from — things you genuinely can't find anywhere else — alongside a core range that covers all the bases. Highlights include the Roadtrip IPA, the Mt Macedon Pale Ale, and the Temptress Choc Porter, one of the best dark beers in the country. My favourite was the Australian XPA. If you find something you love, you can pick up cans, bottles or kegs to take home from the onsite bottleshop.
Woodend is only an hour from Melbourne (we caught the train and it was a great way to see the countryside), and Holgate alone makes the trip worthwhile, but do explore the rest of the town, especially the bakery and bookstores. Arrive around midday when it opens, explore the old pub, then head through to the brewery. The perfect mid-week escape.
